"I was unable to ski without a brace using hydraulic supports and yet, just two months after Arthrosamid® in both knees, I was on black runs again without any support - it is literally life changing."

What is Knee
Osteoarthritis ?

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a long-term condition where the shock-absorbing cartilage is worn away causing bones to rub together and the joint to become stiff, swollen and painful. The knee joint worsens over time resulting in synovial pain and disability.

Synovial pain (synovitis)

Synovial pain is a common symptom experienced by patients with knee OA. This is caused by the inflammation of synovial tissue (the lining) located inside the knee joint, and is strongly linked with the level of pain experienced by knee OA patients.

Arthrosamid® is a permanent injectable hydrogel implant that delivers long-lasting, proven pain relief without surgery, redefining treatment for knee OA

The first and only approved injectable implant treatment that permanentlycombines with the knee’s synovial tissue.

Arthrosamid® decreases joint stiffness, diminishes pain, improves the function of the knee, and enhances your quality of life. Arthrosamid® is administered via a simple, one-step procedure performed under local anaesthesia by a qualified physician familiar with joint injections - ensuring you’re in and out of the clinic the same day.

Supported by more than two decades of research, Arthrosamid® is suitable, safe and effective11,13 for most patients with knee OA — and is proven to maintain a significant, long-lasting1,2 reduction in knee OA pain even five years post-treatment.

“My knees were in constant pain, I was not eligible for surgery so was undergoing physiotherapy, in addition to taking over-the-counter pain medication, both on a regular basis. Nothing worked, and my walking and general mobility was deteriorating - I felt my general outlook was bleak, with no other options on the horizon. However, Arthrosamid® injections were almost immediately different and after just one week I was able to walk more normally again, pain was reduced by about 90% and I am confident my knee will continue to improve. I have my life back again and that is all due to this amazing new treatment."

What is Arthrosamid

Based on an innovative non-biodegradable hydrogel technology, Arthrosamid® is 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide and 97.5% water, made by the Danish Orthopaedic Biotech company, Contura. In technical terms, it is an 'injectable polyacrylamide hydrogel' otherwise known as '2.5 iPAAG'.

It is approved for treatment of knee OA and is suitable, safe, and effective for most patients with the condition.

Arthrosamid®  permanently combines with the knee’s synovial tissue — decreasing joint stiffness, diminishing pain, improving the function of the knee, and enhancing quality of life. Because it binds to the tissue of the knee, it is classed as an implant though apart from patients needing an oral antibiotic dose two hours before treatment, in all other respects it is just the same as a normal knee injection (eg Steroid or Hyaluronic Acid).

18,000 Patients have been treated across the UK and Europe so far and data suggests that with one single treatment the benefit can potentially last up to and over 5 years.

Frequently asked questions

  • Arthrosamid® will benefit younger patients under 70yrs old who wish to delay the need for knee surgery and also those who are deemed inoperable due to other factors such as anaesthetic risk. Evidence in the under-70s shows 80% of patients have a reduction in knee pain three years after treatment.

  • As with most joint injections, there may be slight discomfort due to the injection procedure. This is minimised with good injection technique (Dr Pierini carries out knee injections most weeks at Spa Private Medical) and, if needed, the use of an ice pack after the procedure. Rarely the flare can last 48-72hrs, but can be managed with over-the-counter analgesia.

  • No, the use of Arthrosamid won’t affect future knee surgery options.
The of the injection (for one knee) at Spa is £2500 – this includes a ½ hr pre-injection appointment to assess the knee joint, discuss any questions and issue the antibiotic prescription. There is then a second ½ hr appointment (also included) in which the procedure is carried out.
