Dr Andy Henson

I qualified from University College Hospital Medical School, London, in 1990. After my first house job in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, I moved to Cheltenham to do my hospital medical rotation.

I then moved to the New Forest for GP Registrar training in Hythe, and after gaining my MRCGP qualification, I spent several years as part of an education team for a clinical trial, providing education to Gp Practice teams on the diagnosis and treatment of depression (Hampshire Depression Project). I also passed the diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (DRCOG).

In 1998 I moved back to Gloucestershire and became a partner in a small inner-city practice in Gloucester, where I remained until 2002.

I then joined Newent Doctors Practice, and stayed as a partner for nearly 23 years. I thoroughly enjoyed my career at this Practice, where we ran personal lists which allowed for continuity of care; the ability to get to know patients and their extended families over many years. My family settled and grew up in the area, which helped me feel part of the community. Latterly, I became a joint Clinical Director for our Primary Care Network, involving five local Practices and a population of around 50,000 people. During this time, we were able to significantly increase the Primary Health Care Team, by appointing a range of professionals including Clinical Pharmacists and Technicians, First Contact Physiotherapists, Mental Health Nurses, a Community Frailty Nursing team, and Social Prescribers.

I have been able to take partial retirement and now work part-time. Having recently met Steve, I’ve been lucky enough to join Spa Private Medical, which gives a very varied experience but also enough time to spend with patients where I aim to provide the best possible service.

I have three grown-up children; one following a career in ecology, one has his own business, and my daughter has just started as an HCA; along with a stepson from my second marriage, who is now training to be a Royal Marine. I am very proud of all of them and lucky enough to be around to witness their growth and development.

My wife works within Gloucestershire as a Social Prescribing Link Worker, and we also have three gorgeous golden retrievers who take up a large part of our spare time, not the least of which is showering them after their daily walks and vacuuming after their persistent shedding!

I have just passed an introductory course in welding and have gone on to buy myself a TIG welder!………
